Derek Webb’s fifth solo album is something of a surprise at first blush — but then again, anyone who has followed his career since leaving Christian rockers Caedmon’s Call in 2003 should know better than to be surprised by stylistic left turns. Much of his solo work has been in a folk-pop vein, even as his lyrical concerns have pushed the envelope of traditional Christian rock. On Stockholm Syndrome, he takes a giant step in a completely different direction, immersing himself in a glitchy, looped-up, hip-hoppish ambience — gratefully, he resists the temptation to rap, but many of the album’s quirky funk grooves wouldn’t sound out of place on a N.E.R.D. or Gnarls Barkley project. Webb’s tendency to emote in an explicitly Bono-esque manner remains a little bit irritating (especially on the bombastically U2-ish chorus to “Becoming a Slave”), but there’s no questioning his individuality on tracks like the doo wop-meets-trip-hop “Freddie, Please,” the almost torchy “The State,” and the clicky, glitch-based “What You Give Up to Get It.” All of these are robustly tuneful and hooky. Lyrically, Webb takes on issues of race and sexuality with much more nuance than you might expect, and in ways that his co-religionists are likely to find a bit discomforting. After touring Europe in early 1965 with his trio, Bill Evans came back to the U.S., made an album with the Claus Ogerman Orchestra and departed again for Europe, performing first in Berlin and then in Stockholm at the Golden Circle club, known locally as the Gyllende Cirklen. Recorded on somebody’s funky little taping unit during the nights of November 15 and 19, 1965, the music heard on tracks one through thirteen document exactly how Bill Evans sounded in energetic collaboration with bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Rune Carlsson. Although the sound quality is far from optimum, the spontaneous magic of collective improvisation certainly comes across. Three bonus tracks were rendered down from a 1968 television broadcast with a trio of Evans, Eddie Gómez and Jack DeJohnette, augmented on tracks 15 and 16 by the CBS Orchestra, and by John Lewis on a second piano during Lewis’ “Almost Blues.” “Granadas” was written by Spanish pianist and composer Enriqué Granados (1867-1916). Calling Gearhead Records home, Sweden’s “Demons” (quotation marks mandatory) returned from the basement with Stockholm Slump. Although the group had released a few singles and EPs, Slump is the first proper follow-up to their 2000 LP, Riot Salvation. Like their more widely know countrymen the Hives, “Demons” seem to have grown up in some sort of musical vacuum where they allowed only a steady diet of Nuggets-approved rock and its grimy offspring, namely MC5 and the Stooges. The group’s sound shares common ground with American acts like the New Bomb Turks (who inked a deal with Gearhead themselves), but it also owes a great deal to Finnish garage rats Flaming Sideburns. However, whereas the Sideburns (and the Turks) have tempered their raucous guitar rock with some Stones-y swagger and Velvet Underground-esque cool detachment and cynical romanticism, “Demons” are undiluted rock & roll. The group couldn’t be on a more appropriate record label, as the muscle car aesthetic of Gearhead goes perfectly with the group’s testosterone-fueled brand of guitar assault. While this unadulterated rock sound will be appealing to many fans of the genre perpetuated by labels like Sympathy for the Record Industry and Crypt, in their attempt to stay true to their genre, “Demons” risk coming across as one dimensional and uninspired. Frontman/guitarist Mathias Carlsson has a vocal style that sounds a bit like an exhausted Eric Davidson with a little Motörhead damage, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it becomes a bit monotonous after a few songs. Guitarist Stefan Jonsson and bassist Muffins (that’s right, Muffins) offer up some solid riffs in the Turks/Lazy Cowgirls vein, but ultimately they too become a bit too repetitive for their own good. Picking out specific songs that stand out as highlights is a difficult task, as “Demons” seem to be more about creating an overall feel. The album plays as one long soundtrack rather than songs that are very distinct from one another. It takes several listens before any choruses or riffs begin to make their mark on the listener, but this is still an entertaining, high-octane record that should go over quite well with fans of groups like the New Bomb Turks, Hives, Cheater Slicks, Flaming Sideburns, and MC5. ~ Karen E. How to Properly Set up Your Drum Kit with Great Results
Everyone has difficulty finding the best way to set up their first drum kit. The first thing done wrong in setting up a drum set is having the drum kit in front of you as opposed to positioning yourself in front of the drum kit in a comfortable fashion. Make sure that your throne is correctly positioned, along with all of your drums and cymbals.
You also need to consider what type of music you are going to play. If you are playing rock music, you should keep your hi-hat in the best natural position. If you are going to play blues or jazz, you should keep the ride cymbal in the best natural position.
Whenever you feel like you’ve set up your drums to the best of your abilities, try this: put down the sticks and you should be able to touch every single piece on the kit with your hand.
There isn’t necessarily a perfect way to set up your drum kit but in order to reach your full playing potential you should follow the simple steps outlined below.
1. The drum throne height should be adjusted so that there’s a bend in your knees of no more than 90 degrees. Sit up straight & as far forward on the stool as possible in order to improve power to your feet, which will help project your energy forward.
2. The bass drum should have its legs extended so that it sits securely on the ground. Position the kick drum pedal onto the bass drum so that it doesn’t force your legs & feet into any uncomfortable positions.
3. Place the snare drum & stand between your legs at about waist level. The snare drum can be set up flat or at an angle, whichever is more comfortable.
4. The Toms should be mounted tightly so they don’t move when they are being played. They should be positioned around the snare drum so that they are easy to hit without having to strain.
5. The ride cymbal & hi-hats should be adjusted so that there is plenty of clearance over the toms & the snare drum. The hi-hat is placed next to the snare drum, the ride cymbal is placed next to the floor tom & any crash cymbals should be placed in front of the kit itself. Once all the cymbals are arranged correctly, they can then be situated to your preference.
