Crazy $35.69 The acknowledged king of adult contemporary offers up a CD that is chock-full of feel-good ballads. Whether he’s covering Sting or Santana, Iglesias manages to deliver the material with the perfect combination of sentiment and showmanship. Some songs, such as “Crazy,” the ballad originally made famous by Patsy Cline, are a little bit too gooey, but others, such as a beautifully arranged version of “Mammy Blue,” are just gooey enough. The album is not short on guest stars; Dolly Parton’s vocals soar on the duet “When You Tell Me That You Love Me.” For the contemporary version of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” the entire London Symphony Orchestra along with the Ambrosian Singers provide a rousing, festive counterpoint to Iglesias’ laid-back lead vocals. There is only one song where collaboration doesn’t work perfectly: On the cover of Sting’s “Fragile,” the writer himself performs lead guitar and backing vocals, making the track sound oddly like a karaoke version with an extremely good studio singer. Overall this album is difficult to fault, though. It is beautifully scored, easily accessible to any listener, and performed to perfection in Iglesias’ inimitable style. It’s liable to sound familiar from the first time you listen to it; and indeed, even if you haven’t heard the CD in its entirety before, you’ve probably heard most of the tracks on a commercial, a radio station, or a compilation of romantic fireside songs. ~ L. Katz, Rovi |

Crazy Rhythm $13.58 When Delmark Records President Bob Koester acquired the catalog of Blackbird Records and decided to reissue the Chicago Footwarmers’ ’60s LP Hip Flasks and Hotcha, he had an interesting — and very good — idea: how about combining the contents of that old LP (which was recorded in 1966 and 1967) with material from a new Footwarmers session he would produce? Tuba player/Footwarmers founder Mike Walbridge and long-time Footwarmers clarinetist/alto saxophonist Kim Cusack both liked the idea; thus, a new session was scheduled in 2007. Crazy Rhythm, a 63-minute CD, contains eight new tracks that were recorded in 2007 as well as nine selections that were recorded in 1966 or 1967 and originally appeared on Hip Flasks and Hotcha. Walbridge and Cusack are heard on both the new performances and the Hip Flasks and Hotcha performances, but while the ’60s lineup includes the late banjo player Eddie Lynch and the late drummer Glen Koch (pianist Johnny Cooper is added in 1967), the 2007 version of Mike Walbridge’s Chicago Footwarmers employs Don Stiernberg on banjo and guitar and Bob Cousins on drums. Regardless, there are no major stylistic differences between the Footwarmers in 1966-1967 and the Footwarmers 40 or 41 years later in 2007; the Footwarmers have remained firmly planted in jazz’s pre-bop era, providing classic jazz with a strong ’20s/early-’30s appeal. Classic jazz, the jazz that came after Dixieland but before the swing era of 1935-1945, could easily be described as early swing because that’s what it essentially was — and that classic jazz/early swing perspective serves Walbridge and Cusack well whether they are turning their attention to “On the Alamo” and “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” in 2007 or “Big Butter and Egg Man,” “Sunday,” and “Darktown Strutters Ball” in the ’60s. Walbridge and Cusack haven’t lost anything in the chops department, and consistency is the rule on this pleasing disc. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Don Stiernberg – Banjo, Guitar; Eddie Lynch – Banjo; Mike Walbridge – Tuba; Bob Cousins – Drums; Glen Koch – Drums; Johnny Cooper – Piano; Kim Cusack – Clarinet, Sax (Alto) |

Still Crazy $12.79 The film Still Crazy is the story of the fictional ’70s British rock band Strange Fruit. After showing their breakup in the late ’70s, the movie follows the groups attempt to reunite in the late ’90s. An obvious spoof of many bands from that era currently on the oldies circuit, it gave some good insight into how difficult it is for these bands to recapture their former glory. While the film was only a modest success, this 14-track album manages to recreate the style and at the same time pay tribute to stadium rock bands like Styx, Blue Oyster Cult, Grand Funk Railroad, and even Lynyrd Skynyrd. The opening song “Flame Still Burns” was delivered at a pivotal moment in the film when the group stood stone faced in front of a festival crowd of 50 thousand. It is a sprawling eight-minute “Free Bird”-esque rock anthem with a dazzling final guitar solo. The track, which is the films strongest, captures the essence of this genre and the rest of the album struggles to keep up. There are a few decent tracks including the gritty “Dirty Town” and the operatic “Scream Freedom,” both of which hold up rather well when disassociated from the film. Even with a few weak songs this album serves as a decent tribute to the misunderstood beauty of ’70s stadium rock. ~ Curtis Zimmermann, Rovi Performers: Steve Nieve – Harpsichord, Synthesizer, Piano; Alan Dunn – Accordion; Anthony Pleeth – Cello; Bob Loveday – Mandolin, Violin; Brian Gulland – Tuba; Claudia Fontaine – Vocals (Background); Jimmy Nail – Vocals (Background); Morgan Nicholls – Organ (Hammond); Paul Carrack – Organ (Hammond); |

More Crazy Hits $11.14 “He’s lean, he’s mean, and he’s green!” says the intro track to Crazy Frog’s second album, More Crazy Hits, overlooking that his odd powder-blue shade is part of the Frog’s craziness. Crazy Hits featured about an equal amount of Crazy Frog’s vocal stylings and session vocalists, but this time around, the Frog is almost completely relegated to the sidelines. Much like the Kidz Bop Kids, who merely sing backup on their namesake collections of pop covers, Crazy Frog only contributes the odd “ding a dang dong” here and there on More Crazy Hits’ 11 songs. Amazingly, Crazy Frog didn’t exhaust the supply of novelty dance hits on his first album; the versions of “Cotton Eyed Joe,” “Ice Ice Baby,” and “Blue” — a song that was almost all babble to begin with — that appear here are just as silly as the songs on Crazy Hits. It’s not until the album’s last track, “Copa Banana,” that Crazy Frog finally gets to really unleash a stream of his trademark gibberish, but there are a few bright moments elsewhere: the World Cup-friendly version of “We Are the Champions” and “Rock Steady” keep it simple and stupid, while the sheer weirdness of hearing the early-’60s pop classic “Hey Baby” reworked as novelty Euro-dance makes it another highlight. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Ian Freeman – Vocals |

Crazy Clown Time $11.87 Crazy Clown Time may be David Lynch’s first solo album, but he’s far from a newcomer to music-making. He worked so closely with Angelo Badalamenti on the soundtracks to his films and television shows that the term “Lynchian” can be applied to music as well as movies, and his work with acts such as Blue Bob, Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous, and Danger Mouse as a musician and sound designer underscored that he has clear, and creative, musical ideas of his own. He continues to explore these ideas — plus a few new ones — on Crazy Clown Time, handling all the instrumental and vocal duties, with one notable exception: opening track “Pinky’s Dream,” which features the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O. A careening joyride of a song, it harnesses Lynch’s surreal storytelling and O’s breathless wail to thrilling effect; it’s so good that Lynch should consider doing more collaborations like this and Dark Night of the Soul. The second track, “Good Day Today,” is nearly as striking, if only because on the surface, it seems like such a departure from Lynch’s usual approach. Its brisk synth pop and slightly processed vocals added to the single’s mysterious air when it was released on a small U.K. label nearly a year before the album arrived, but the way its tentative hopefulness hovers above ominous industrial sounds is pure Lynch. After this pop gambit, Crazy Clown Time gets progressively weirder — or perhaps progressively more normal for a David Lynch album. “The Night Bell with Lightning” and “I Know,” previously the B-side to “Good Day Today,” serve up the kind of avant-surf and roadhouse blues played at Twin Peaks’ One Eyed Jack’s or The Pink Room, while the eerie “Movin’ On” recalls how the soundtrack to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me edged away from the TV show’s dreamy nostalgia into much more unpredictable territory. However, the album offers more than just one flavor of eccentricity: on “Strange and Unproductive Thinking,” Lynch tackles everything from cosmic awareness to tooth decay in a vocodered tone that evokes electronic pioneer Bruce Haack; the dark innocence of “These Are My Friends” suggests Daniel Johnston. Appropriately, “Crazy Clown Time” is the most twisted of all, pairing a nightmarish musique concrète backdrop with a spoken word rant that sounds like Lynch reading a new screenplay and voicing all of the characters. Even if Crazy Clown Time isn’t as accessible as some of the collaborations that arrived shortly before the album, Lynch fans will appreciate it as another example of his ability to put his unmistakable stamp on every art form he attempts. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: David Lynch – Omnichord, Percussion, Guitar, Synthesizer, Vocals; Dean Hurley – Organ (Hammond), Drums, Bass, Guitar, Synthesizer; |

World Gone Crazy $16.98 Ten years separate World Gone Crazy from Sibling Rivalry, their last studio album, but the bigger news about this 2010 release is that it sees the Doobie Brothers reuniting with Ted Templeman, the producer of their breakthrough ‘70s hits. With Templeman at the board, the Doobies wind up with a tight album that recalls all of their glory days — even the smooth blue-eyed soul of Michael McDonald, who graciously guests on “Don’t Say Goodbye” — in a mere 11 songs. The Doobies certainly mean to evoke the past, but they never sound forced when they indulge in some “Black Water”-styled fingerpicking, ease back for a little bit of boogie, or even re-create the AOR thump of their late-‘80s comeback, “The Doctor.” Some credit must go to the old pro Templeman, who certainly knows how to pull out the best from a band, but Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, John McFee, and Mike Hossack are in fine form, writing solid songs and giving relaxed, lived-in performances, all adding up to a surprising strong album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Crazy Girl [WM] $15.98 In his brief 38 years, composer Krzysztof Komeda wrote film music for 60 movies, and was the principal architect for the scores of works from Roman Polanski. Though not on a par with Nino Rota or Ennio Morricone, Komeda made his mark with modern post-bop jazz. The Komeda Project is dedicated to preserving his music, interpreting his charts, and expanding on the themes with their own personal stamp of approval. This CD is not a soundtrack to any movies, but select compositions from the screen works are given updates. The saxophone-trumpet front line of Krzysztof Medina and Russ Johnson are very much like Joe Henderson and Kenny Dorham in that they have a good sense of each others strengths, and play together quite well — neither voice dominates the other. Pianist Andrzej Winnicki is the real star here, as are his driving comping, left-hand basslines, and harmonic sense, which color the compositions in shades of fiery red, dark blue, and deep purple. You hear some outstanding music of Komeda’s, but there are several standout originals written by Winnicki. “Is That Your Final Answer?” straight out of Regis Philbin’s mouth, is a fleet post-bop original using Charles Mingus-like stop/start phrases or up-and-down dynamics, brimming with ideas and shared purpose. In addition, “Stop Time” is a very hip 6/8 to 4/4 modal ear popper reminiscent of John Coltrane’s “Syeeda’s Song Flute.” Equally startling are the first two pieces — the title track (from Polanski’s Knife in the Water) that sits light and breezy, reminiscent of the mainstream jazz signature of the Blue Note label but with a distinct edge, while “Kattorna” (from the movie of the same name) sports a strong, upbeat, direct melody with clockwork rhythms feeding a repetitive bassline. These two tracks clearly identify the quintet’s intentions, realized all the way through. There are introspective, free floating introductions or bowed bass-led melodies courtesy of Michael Bates, more waltz tempos, singing and swinging modalities. Only two remotely film noir image pieces are present — the haunting-to-pretty “Ballada” (also from Knife in the Water) and “Sleep Safe & Warm,” (from Polanski’s all-timer Rosemary’s Baby) a serene after-hours, one-minute piano-flugelhorn lullaby duet. A further introduction to Komeda’s music can be heard on many other recordings, but the Project has done his sound proud on this vital, exciting, and seminal offering that cannot come more highly recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Andrzej Winnicki – Piano; David Anthony – Drums; Michael Bates – Bass; Russ Johnson – Flugelhorn, Trumpet |

Rust Never Sleeps: Neil Young & Crazy Horse $11.52 Don’t be misled by the director’s name; “Bernard Shakey” is really rock star Neil Young, who is also the center attraction of this music documentary. There’s no plot, of course, just 103 minutes’ worth of concert footage, filmed during Young’s 1979 tour with his back-up band Crazy Horse. Musical highlights include “My, My, Hey Hey” (Out of the Blue)”, “Thrasher” and “Powderfinger”. If you missed this film, we refer you to the critically and financially successful record album of the same name. After both the film and record version of Rust Never Sleeps were sent into distribution, there was still enough material left over for another album, Live Rust. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Honky Tonk Crazy (And Other Love Songs) $11.18 With a co-write on the ’50s country hit “There She Goes,” — and with numerous road houses, recording sessions, and radio programs to his credit — Durwood Haddock was right there in the hot crucible of honky tonk, long before it went all sepia-toned. But to have the old master still kicking around in 2007 could be conceived as little more than a curiosity or stab at nostalgia, were it not for the quality of Honky Tonk Crazy (And Other Love Songs). The album takes a real stripped-down approach toward arrangement and instrumentation, with acoustic guitar and Haddock’s big sorrowful voice out front and light washes of violin, occasional piano plunks, and the rare electric-guitar twang fleshing out the more subtle hues. One has to wonder where Haddock has been hiding these 13 originals, for most neo-honky tonkers would give their eyeteeth for just one of these nuggets. Haddock, here at 72, proves himself to still be a top-notch purveyor of traditional country music. These are deeply hollowed-out and comfortable tracks, with Haddock’s careworn, unpretentious vocal delivery (which is somewhere in the neighborhood of Merle Haggard’s) leading you through a land of old taverns, heartache, and hill towns that he knows all too well. There really isn’t a loser in the bunch, but highlights include “You Can Count on Me (If You Can’t Count Too High),” “(While the World Turns) Bluer Than Blue,” and “Last Night I Really Had a Bawl.” This is unabashedly tear-in-your beer stuff, but the relatively lo-fi atmosphere and the sui generis aura of Haddock himself add something stirring and nearly indescribable, though the word “real” certainly starts arriving at it. ~ Erik Hage, Rovi Performers: Durwood Haddock – Lap Steel Guitar, Fiddle, Guitar (Rhythm), Harmonica, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Bass, Drums, Guitar (Bass), Keyboards |

A Proper Introduction to Babs Gonzales: Real Crazy $9.98 When Lee Brown/Babs Brown/Ricardo Gonzales eventually became bop vocalist Babs Gonzales in 1944, he quickly established a unique sound only rivaled in later years by Eddie Jefferson or Pancho Hagood, and popularly assimilated by Dizzy Gillespie. This “Proper Introduction” is a compendium of various different sessions done in 1947, 1949, 1956, and 1958 in New York City, Los Angeles, and New Jersey, representing the true cream of the crop sides Gonzales waxed. Many historic moments occur, famous tunes are played in modified forms, and scat based in stretched, extended vowel techniques are the things Gonzales specializes in, just this side of the nonsensical musings of Slim Gaillard. While he never received the acclaim or credit he deserved, his innovations still resonate with those singers and fans who dare to take a listen to his hilarious, witty, skilled, and crafty material. The eight sessions from 1947 feature Tadd Dameron playing piano and contributing in group vocals, the highlight clearly being “Oop-Pop-A-Da,” written by Gonzales but spread further by Gillespie. This version sports an actual lyric and a modified third line instead of just the simplified title repeated and improvised off of. There’s a variation of Charlie Parker’s “Ornithology” titled “Pay Dem Dues,” a cool extrapolation on “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” several scatty bop tunes, and the haunting refrains of “Weird Lullaby” or the heartbreaking “Runnin’ Around.” Several larger ensemble selections done in N.Y.C. purportedly feature the first recording dates for Sonny Rollins from 1949. “Professor Bop” is an autobiographical tale of how bop was rendered, as Rollins is teamed with J.J. Johnson, while “Indiana” or “Donna Lee” is paraphrased melodically on “Real Crazy” with a band featuring Rollins, Johnson, Don Redman, Wynton Kelly, and Ray Nance. The violin of Nance moans and cries alongside the flute playing of Alberto Soccares and Gonzales for the pensive, regretful “When Lovers They Lose.” This band also does a killer, quick, wildly mutated “St. Louis Blues,” laden with counterpoint and as unique a version of this standard as you will ever hear. These sessions comprise the bulk of the Capitol/Blue Note label reissue Weird Lullaby, but extra tracks, including definitive numbers like “Cool Whalin’” from 1952, or “Get Out That Bed” and “For Dancers Only” via out of print recordings for the Spotlite and Chiaroscuro labels make this a more attractive, definitive package, one that every lover of this style of singing should want and treasure. ~ Michael G.
